Animals in a city: unrecognized biological threat

Martsinovski Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine, Moscow, Russia

Problems related to risk of contracting of zoonotic infections and invasions by people in a city has been discussed. Such risk is related with wide-accepted practice to keep pets and wild animals in city flats and absence of knowledge in general population about animals’ parasites and measures of individual prophylaxis of zoonosis. Large number of stray dogs and habitation of wild animal species on territories of cities represent additional threats. Conclusion about need of inclusion of prophylactic and antiepidemic measures in programs of city improvement was made.
