Immunotropic and anticoagulant properties of fucoidan from brown seaweed Fucus evanescens: perspectives of application in medicine

Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Vladivostok, Russia

The paper presents the generalized results of investigation of immunotropic and anticoagulant properties of fucoidan — nontoxic sulfated polysaccharide from brown seaweed of Okhotsk sea Fucus evanescens. It was shown that fucoidan has the stimulate action on humoral and cellular immune response, on the functional activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, on the production of proinflammatory cytokines. Fucoidan reveals the anticoagulant activity both in vitro and in vivo comparable with heparin activity. These results indicate perspectives for designing the drugs on basis of fucoidan with immunomodule and anticoagulant properties.
