226 patients with West Nile fever were registered in the Astrakhan region during the period of 1991 — 2002, including 216 patients in Astrakhan and in 9 rural districts of the region during the period 1997 — 2002. In 1999 five out of 95 West Nile fever patients died. The main part of the patients (70%) included the residents of Astrakhan and small towns. The vectors of West Nile fever virus were, most probably, mosquitoes Culex pipiens, C.modestus and Mansonia richiardii.
