Plague-Control Station, Elista, Russia
The activation of the natural focus of Crimean hemorrahagic fever (CHF) on the territory of the Republic of Kalmykia was registered in 2000 — 2004, which caused the rise of CHF morbidity among humans (8 cases in 2000, 3 cases in 2001, 13 cases in 2002, 23 cases in 2003, 15 cases in 2004; two of these patients died). The activization of the focus was due to a sharp increase in the number of the main host and vector of the causative agent of CHF, ticks of the species Hyalomma marginatum.
