Comparative evaluation of the sensitivity and specificity of the methods of the serological diagnostics of Crimean hemorrhagic fever

Dagestan Plague-Control Station, Makhachkala; Research Institute for Plague Control, Stavropol, Russia

The results of the comparative evaluation of the volume sintering test (VST) and the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the diagnostics of Crimean hemorrhagic fever (CRF) are presented. The study revealed that VST, though easily available and comparatively cheap, offered difficulties in the evaluation of its results due to indistinct controls, while EIA made it possible to detect early IgM antibodies to the causative agent of CHF in diagnostic titers, starting from day 3 of the disease. Thus EIA was shown to be more informative for the diagnostics of CHF.
