According to the data of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance Center in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), no group or outbreak morbidity in viral hepatitis A (VHA) was observed in Olekminsk in 1996 — 2000. During the post-inundation period of August–September 2001 an outbreak of VHA morbidity was registered in Oleksminsk .In three provisional hospitals and in the specialized infectious department of the Central Ulus Hospital 154 patients with diagnosed acute viral hepatitis were hospitalized. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) was detected in drinking water. In the blood sera of patients anti-HAV IgM was detected by the method of the enzyme immunoassay. No cases of complications, relapses and reinfection were observed. To ensure the prophylaxis of VHA in the presence of the continued outbreak of the disese, g-globulin prophylaxis of the child population of Olekminsk, covering 94.2% of children aged up to 14 years, was carried out. Observations showed that this g-globulin prophylaxis proved to be inexpedient.
